"I just love Death, don't you?"
The sentence that started it all came in the summer of 2012: “I just love Death, don’t you?”
Certainly an odd sentence to hear someone utter…unless of course, it is uttered by a Supernatural fan.
Mandy Taylor and Susan Nylander came to Supernatural between seasons seven and eight. Binge-watching through the series to get caught up was both a thrill ride and a revelation as the two academics fell hard for a show that contains all of the literary elements of good storytelling, such as well-developed characters, plots, and thematic arcs. Upon seeing Death the Horseman's introduction in the episode “Two Minutes to Midnight” (5.21), Mandy and Susan began to form the idea for an academic paper.
First presented at the Southwest Popular & American Culture Association conference in Albuquerque in 2014, the resulting paper “Death in Supernatural” became the foundation for this collection of essays.
